החל ממרץ 2016

Each year as summer rears its steamy head, my initial reaction is to book a one-way plane ticket to some far-flung island with little to no cell service, a bikini-only policy, and water so blue that you can see straight through to the ocean floor. And yet, each year I ultimately end up reminding myself that not only do I have a full-time job and expensive New York City rent due at the end of the month, but vacations prefaced by words like far-flung and exotic are almost always outside of my price range.

That’s why this summer, I’ve opted to stay put. I’ll survive this New York City summer without dipping my toes into crystal clear waters or learning to surf on a beach in Costa Rica. But just because my passport will be collecting dust these next few months doesn’t mean I can’t incorporate the sun, sand, and ocean into my day-to-day in some way. And what better way to channel my dream vacation than with a summer surf-inspired wardrobe makeover?

As swimwear continues to rule the runways in the form of outerwear, the idea of dressing like you’re on vacation, even when you’re not, doesn’t seem like such a far stretch. At Louis Vuitton’s Resort 2017 presentation, models stomped down the runway in neoprene zip-up dresses reminiscent of rash guards—the protective garb surfers wear to shield them from abrasions, cold temperatures, and the sun’s skin-damaging UV rays. Even the French fashion brand Courrèges paid homage to the scuba suit for Spring 2017, while Alexander Wang gave a nod to beach-bum board shorts.

High fashion runway looks aside, is the surfer-girl look actually something you can pull off in a metropolitan city like New York? With the help of Vogue’s market editor, Anny Choi, I was determined to find out.

I first test-drive a sleeveless navy blue rash guard by Tory Sport from our One World Trade Center office to lunch overlooking the Hudson River—the closest I’ll get to a wave sighting at 1 p.m. in Lower Manhattan. With a sleek, belted pair of high-waisted shorts, a lightweight bucket bag, and crocodile slides, it’s also the closest I’ve ever come to being a walking meme. “When you have that big fashion meeting at 9, but you have to catch a wave at 3,” I joke with my coworkers as we exit our office building.

I immediately fall in love with the way the neoprene fabric of the rash guard sculpts to fit my body. And the no-sleeves aspect is much appreciated considering the sweltering temperatures of downtown New York. My only con lay in the thickness of the rash guard’s fabric. While neoprene does an excellent job at protecting skin from earth’s damaging UV rays, my sweating torso posed a problem for its water-resistant fabric. Instead of evaporating, my sweat clung to my body right up until I took it off later on that day.

For look number two, I put on a striped pair of board shorts from the menswear section at Solid & Striped to take a leisurely stroll around Tribeca. Once Choi styled them with an oversize sweater by Khaite, a strappy pair of black sandals from The Row, and the teensiest black Valentino clutch, I decided that stealing your boyfriend’s board shorts might be the next big thing. “Forget wearing his button-down! Just take his swim trunks and call it a day,” says Choi laughing as we cross the street. My coworker Deirdre proclaims that I’ve found the perfect summer date-night outfit, and I’d have to agree. “This look screams, ‘I have a rich boyfriend with a beach house in Nantucket,’ ” she quips.

For my third and final attempt, Choi outfitted me in a floral-themed look fit for the office or a quick gelato run. Both the rash guard and the checkered skirt by Christopher Kane featured a beloved flower of mine, the purple pansy.

All in all, I consider the experiment a success. Incorporating surf style into my everyday wardrobe hasn’t brought me any closer to my dream beach vacation this summer, but it certainly has inspired me to find the island vibes wherever I am in the world. “Maybe summer in New York isn’t all that bad,” I tell myself as I price check beach house rentals in the Hamptons.Read more at:mermaid prom dresses | backless evening dresses
